Meeting Notes - Aug 30

  • Tonight’s program Patrol:Vikings; Scout skills: first aid, safe swim defense, and safe trip afloat.
  • Next meeting Sept 13; program Patrol TBD; Scout skills: Edge method training and 3 Rs of self protection (Tenderfoot, 1st-Class, and 2nd-Class).  Wear your Class-A uniform!

    • Mr. Janek  gave us an update on Ohio State ushering.  All of our forms are turned in now.  We’re working Sept 18, Oct 9, Oct 23.  If you work all four games, you’ll have the opportunity to work the Michigan game on Nov 27.
    • Mr. Wobser – Service hours available on Sept 11 for the Old Hilliard 5K.  Watch for more race announcements next week, too.
    • We’ve got a couple of adult leader training courses coming up in the next few weeks.  Greenbar will be held on Sept 18, Oct 2, and Oct 16, and Okama will be on Sept 25, Oct 9, Oct 23, and Nov 15.  If you’re interested in either of these programs, talk to Mrs. Kirke; she’s on staff for both of these.
    • Mrs Kirke also sent out some info on activities and costs for our October caving campout.  Please check your email for these and decide if you’ll be attending the campout.  We’ll need to get some RSVP’s by meeting time in two weeks (Sept 13).
    • Mr. Graves thanked everyone who helped with the brat fest.  This is very important to show our appreciation to the Church for everything they do for us.  Mr. Martin received a $500 donation from the Church to thank us for our help; this will go into our general fund.

    • Attention Buckeye fans!  We’re looking at possibly volunteering to do some ushering at Ohio State football games.  Here’s the drill:  We’d show up at the stadium about three hours prior to kickoff, receive some training, and then go to our appointed location.  As guests arrive for the game, we’d greet them and help them find their seats.  Once the game starts, you’ll be able to stand in a designated area to watch the game.  While at the game, you’ll need to wear your full class-A uniform, including shirt, BSA pants, BSA socks, and a BSA cap (no neckerchief is necessary).  If you’re interested, please contact Mr. Janik.
    • Thanks to everyone who worked at Sunday’s race.  We’ve got a few more races coming up, including a half-marathon on Sept 5.  On Sept 11, Hilliard is looking for volunteers for a five-mile race in the morning (note: this is the same day as the First Responders Park dedication).  This would be a true volunteer opportunity, but you’d be able to record service hours for this event.

  • Tonight’s program Patrol: Froggies; Scout skills: Heimlich maneuver, signs of wildlife, day and night directions.
  • Next week’s program Patrol: Froggies (I don’t know how that happened); Scout skills: Tenderfoot first aid, ten signs of plant life, and knots, knots, knots.
  • Upcoming events:
    • St. James Brat Fest – Aug 6-8.  Mrs. Locke is still trying to fill a few shifts, including some overnight shifts (Fri? / Sat?).  Please contact her if you can help, and remember that we need all Scouts to work at least one shift over the weekend.
    • Columbus 1/2 Marathon – Aug 15.  This race is in Hilliard – click the link for details, and see Mr. Wobser if you want to sign up to help.
    • IMG_8421 Wilderness Survival Campout – Aug 20-22.  See Mr. Graves or Mr. Hansford if you’re planning on attending.  Tent assignments and menu planning will be next week.

    • Game planning will now be done in PLC in order to streamline this process.
    • Remember to take care of Troop gear during campouts!  We’re considering making “gear cleaning” a Scout skill to help everyone get the hang of this.
    • Zach sent a big thanks to everyone for coming out last week to help with his Eagle project.  There’s still some work to be done, though, and he’s organizing another work session this Thursday (July 29) from 1:00 to 4:30 at the Davidson woodshop (the same place as previous sessions).

    • Thanks to all the boys who helped out last week at Day Camp: Evan and Ben J., Kyler S., Alex H., Nick G., Andrew A., Caleb D., Blake E. and Josh C., as well as to all the adults who helped:  Donna Hansford, Scott Lane, Ray Pearsall, Colin O’Connor, Cheryl Crabtree, Erin Kirke, Kevin Lines, Kevin Kirke, Richard Dawkins, and of course, Betsy Jones!
    • Zach B. needs more help with his Eagle project!  If you’ve got a paint sprayer that can shoot polyurethane and you can part with it for a little while, Zach could use this for his project.  In addition, he’s got three work dates set up this week, and he needs volunteers:
      • Wed (1pm - 4:30)
      • Thursday (2pm - 4:30)
      • Saturday (8am – 1pm)  Zach will provide lunch from Chipotle on Saturday if you sign up with him in advance (and tell him what you want!)
      • Volunteers will meet at at the Hilliard Davidson wood shop on the back of the school, facing the bus garage.

    • Mr. Bryan conducted our first Youth Protection training session.
    • Mr. Bryan also presented a short informational slideshow about Crooked Creek.
    • Zack Bringman is still working on his Eagle project, so if you can help with that he’s going to be at the Hilliard Davidson wood shop on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 4:30 both this week and next week.  The wood shop is on the back of the school, facing the bus garage.  Please bring gloves, safety glasses and tape measures if you want them.
    • Summer camp is next week!  Tent assignments should be taken care of tonight.  Summer camp info sheet sent to the Sunnydaze list.  The driver list should also be all set at this point.  We’ll meet at 8am by Burger King (not the Church lot).  Be sure to have your Class-A uniform on (not packed)!  Bring $5 cash, because we’ll be stopping for lunch on the way.  It’s not necessary to have your swim trunks on – we’ll have a chance to change when we get down there.  Anyone who wishes to participate in any water activities will need to complete a swim test!
    • 916738321_p1070841_smWelcome back, Northern Tier Scouts!  We’re very proud of our two crews; both completed around 50 miles (80 km) of paddling and portaging.  Watch the website for for pictures (coming soon!), and be sure to talk to some of the crew members to learn all about the trip.
    • We have a fundraising opportunity coming up in conjunction with Red, White, and Boom.  We have an opportunity to make 2-3 times what we normally make for races (around $10-15 / hour).  We’d work for 2-3 hours at a time passing out flyers for an upcoming sale.  Mr. Hansford will be coordinating this fundraising opportunity, so please contact him if you’re interested.

BSA car finishes 4th at Indy

Congratulations to Alex Lloyd and the #19 BSA 2010 car - they finished a solid 4th in today's Indianapolis 500!
